Having not posted for a while I thought I’d post a quick post on a hot topic at my club at the moment and that’s - progressive training!
I’ve talked about such things before on this blog and it fits into the category of ‘Efficiency Training’, so let’s hussle!
I am a big proponent on improving your game 1% every session and have been since the early days of my training.
Now, it doesn’t sounds like a lot but if you train 3 times a week, that’s 3% a week, 12% a month and potentially over 140% a year!
When you look at it that way, 1% a session is not only very achievable but also a very exciting prospect for your development.
One way you can achieve progressive development is to set goals for each session you do, like: I want to play my hooking guard more effectively, I want to escape a few more triangles this session, maybe I want to set up omo plata’s on everyone I roll with or even learn how to do a flower sweep properly.
Having something to work every time you get on the mat is an important part of building an efficient training ethos.
Look at it this way you wouldn’t go to the mall/shops and just wander around aimlessly if you wanted to be efficient with your time and bank balance, would you? If you were efficient you’d go down with the product in mind, go to one shop and get the job done.
The same is for training. Coming in with a goal and nailing it before you leave will make your training more efficient and your development much more progressive.
So start making yourself small 1% goals, achieve them each session and leave the long aimless shopping trips to the weekend with the other half.
Ps. Men can be as bad as women at shopping, so that last point isn’t aimed at one sex or the other!
